Bonfires!

Lag B'Omer was interesting--on the actual holiday itself, bonfires were banned because of the heat wave.
However, both my kids' classes did their bonfires two days before (good thing!).
We had a great time participating in this annual tradition of marshmallow roasting and watching kids be very independent with their fires.

As I posted on Facebook, I had a funny discussion with matan...

Tonight kids had bonfires for the holiday of Lag B'Omer this week. Each class had their own. I went to Sivan's and marvelled at how someone brought dough and an oven to make pitas (a special kind of oven). And slow cooked Chai Tea. Israelis really know how to throw a party. I'd be opening up bags of chips, soda, and order pizza. Clearly, I need to step it up. Adam mostly attended Matan's, and so when I was tucking him in last night, I asked him to tell me about it. He had clearly had a good time and was covered in ash when I saw him.
Matan: My favorite part was when we put a door in the fire.
me: a door?
matan: yeah, it was like some wrecked house and we found a door, so we carried it to the fire.
me: who carried it?
matan: me, this other boy, and three girls. it was a heavy door. with a lock.
me: no adult helped?
matan: nope.
me: and did anyone say anything when you threw this door in the fire?
matan: IT'S ISRAEL!!.....i mean, what do you think they'll say "children, be careful, there's a fire....you shouldn't throw things in" (matan mimicks some high pitch worried voice which is clearly his imitation of an American parent).
