If you only have a few hours to show someone Israel....
My mother-in-law came to help out while my husband went to Korea for a work engagement.
I was challenged to take care of my children, which now involves some complicated transportation issues, get some work done, and somehow share with my mother-in-law my Zionist passions in really....a few hours.
Here's the highlights of what we covered...
Here's the mediterranean. Look at it.
Shabbat with matan's best friend and family.
Here's Jaffo. See the flea markets? The food! The history! The diversity! Amazing the changes in the last couple decades to this city.
Here's mazkeret batya--a town with a totally different feel. An early settlement.
Let's drive through a kibbutz.
Hang out with another Israeli family (matan's other friend)
Try turkish coffee.
Try cappuccino. Yummy mint tea.
A mall.
A main street.
Art market in Tel Aviv.
Look at the new construction.
Look at the fields of agriculture.
Do you know what this once was?
Machane Yehuda
Ben Yehuda.
Yoel solomon.
Shabbat in Jerusalem. Here's mamilla mall. The Old City. Shabbat at the Kotel. Davening in the tunnels of the Kotel during shabbat. Going to an amazing dinner at an incredible house.
Shabbat day: Great synagogue. Here's yemin moshe. There's the old city and east jerusalem. Here's the new Old train station in German Colony. Long walk back.
Three stars, and time to go say hello to cousin.
With the exception of Shabbat, everything had to be covered in the very short time my kids were at school.
I hope I might convince Rhona to guest post her thoughts of her whirlwind of a week in Israel that was not being a tourist, but living the life alongside us :)
SOME PIX OVER THE LAST WEEK (in reverse chronology):
Sivan has taken to performing singing at her new school. Her favorite new song is "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen.
A Motzei Shabbat visit to cousin Erica (with Talia in the pic).
Matan and I selfie right before shabbat!
LOVE the Old City!!!
Oh, this was classic. The kids thought these Asian tourists were taking pictures of them. Turns out guy was actually using selfie stick and taking a selfie, but then they all asked if we could actually be in a picture. Next thing we know, we are literally posing with about 25 Singaporians and the tour guide introduces us as "typical Jews" and makes everyone wish us a Shabbat Shalom.
mom chats with tour group:
Singaporian wants to pose with Matan. Matan went along with it nicely.
The Hurva synagogue used to only be an arch after its destruction. In the last few years it was rebuilt and is now the largest synagogue in Israel apparently.
Old Byzantine/greek (or something) road:
Did I mention I love the old city?
got these great mango-pomegranite juice drinks.
soldiers come to spend shabbat in the Old City.
Shuk on Friday morning was CRAZY.
On Thursday night, we went to Yoel Solomon and met Rachaman, a sofer. The kids LOVED watching him write the ancient calligraphy on the parchments we then bought for mezuzot. He even wrote the kids names for them.
Sivan's girl scout troop.
Yaffo, just another beautiful ancient city in Israel.
A quick Mediterranean excursion in the 2 hours we had free.
We were soooo excited to show Rhona Israel! :)
